Dedicated to exceeding your expectations … always

According to the CDC, the most common reason that injuries occur in the bathroom is due to falling. The statistics are based on ages 15 and up, but the dangers increase as people age. A simple slip in the tub or shower can turn into a very serious injury for anyone. Learning how to avoid these risks is essential for everyone, but even more so for the seniors in your life.

Reducing the Risk of Falling

Many falls that occur in the bathroom could be prevented with the proper safety measures put in place. Most of the things that can be done are easily accomplished on your own, making it easy to ensure the safety of your loved one.

  • Check the flooring – If there are any loose rugs or loose tiles in the bathroom, remove them immediately. Loose tiles need to be repaired or replaced, as they pose a serious risk, and rugs should be removed, altogether.
  • Install grab bars – Determine where your loved one can easily grab onto, in the shower, and install a grab bar in that area. Ensure that it is securely attached to the wall studs to enable its stability.
  • Provide a shower chair – For some seniors, a shower chair is a good choice, because it reduces the amount of time that your loved one must be on their feet.
  • Use non-slip mats – Mats that will not slip should be used in the shower or tub, as well as on the floor where they will exit. This eliminates the risk of slipping and falling on the wet, slippery surface.

If you are unsure about the risks of your loved one in the bathroom, talk to his or her senior care provider. He or she will be able to point out the problem areas and help you determine the proper remedies to ensure your loved one’s safety.
