Dedicated to exceeding your expectations … always

Certain lifestyle choices, such as exercise and diet, may help support brain health and delay or even prevent the onset of dementia, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.  There is a direct link between heart and brain health, and the risk of developing dementia appears to increase with conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease.  Diabetes, elevated cholesterol, depression, high estrogen levels, and lifestyle choices like smoking are also risk factors.

Here we list some of the lifestyle choices that may reduce the chances of developing dementia:

Diet

A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and Omega-3 fatty acids may have a protective effect on the brain. A healthy brain is essential for delaying or preventing dementia.

Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for physical and brain health. Getting quality sleep on a regular basis is important for functioning at full capacity. Deep sleep known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is necessary for proper memory functioning and storage. Not getting enough sleep affects not only cognitive function but mood.

Socializing

Getting out of the house, maintaining connections with friends, attending church and other events all keep us engaged and active.  Staying connected has been proven to boost memory, too.

Brain Exercise

Games and crossword puzzles, even learning a new language, can help keep the mind sharp and prevent mental decline and dementia.

Physical Exercise

It is well known that exercise is important for physical health, but the mental health benefits of exercise are also substantial. Research shows that exercise can decrease the risk of dementia by as much as 50%. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous. Even short walks in the neighborhood park can help keep the body and mind healthy.

Hearing

There is now a strong correlation between hearing loss and dementia.  When hearing is impaired the brain becomes so preoccupied with translating sounds, little processing power remains for the incoming information itself.
